Choose the Right Closure For Your Glass & Plastic Packaging
Posted by Discount Vials - A BASCO Company on Jul 31, 2026
Selecting the correct cap or closure is one of the most important parts of choosing packaging. A properly matched closure helps prevent leaks, protects your product, and creates a secure seal for storage and shipping. Whether you're packaging products or storing samples, understanding bottle neck finishes makes it easy to pair the right bottle with the right cap.
At Discount Vials, we offer a wide selection of glass and plastic containers with compatibile caps, droppers, sprayers, pumps, and closures designed to work together.
What You Need to Know Before Choosing a Closure
1. Your bottle or jar and closure must have matching neck finishes.
The bottle and closure must share the same neck finish to ensure a proper fit and reliable seal. Even if two caps appear similar in size, they won't fit correctly unless the neck finish matches.
2. The neck finish is the key to selecting the correct closure.
Every vial, bottle, or jar is identified by a neck finish consisting of two numbers separated by a dash, such as 20-400, 24-410, or 38-400.
These numbers identify the dimensions and thread style of the container, making it easy to find compatible caps, droppers, sprayers, pumps, and other closures.
3. The cap or lid and the bottle or jar must both be measured.
When replacing a closure or matching components from different products, it's important to confirm the neck finish on both the bottle and the cap. Matching the correct dimensions helps ensure a secure seal and proper performance.

How to Measure a Bottle's Neck Finish
Calculate a bottle’s neck finish by:
1. Finding "T" Dimension: Major (Outside) Diameter
Measure from the outermost thread one side to the other outermost thread on the other side with a digital caliper for the most accurate measurments. Used to measure for compatible closure.
2. Finding "H" Dimension: Height/GPI Thread Finish
With a digital caliper, measure from the top of the neck to the point where the diameter "T", extended down, intersects the bottle shoulder.
3. Putting the "T" and "H" Dimensions Together to Complete the Formula
You must know how to find a cap’s diameter, and how to measure the neck finish in order to appropriately pair containers and closures. Use the following steps while letting the diagrams below be your guide:
